WINDRV Client Configurator Tools – Image Copier

8.1

Image Copier is a tool that allows one to copy a normal file, a hard disk partition, a VFS sub-partition, a logical drive or a network file into any of the above formats, except a network file into another network file. Image Copier treats any of these formats simply as a WINDRV file.

To copy a WINDRV file onto a hard disk, Image Copier also provides a convenient method that automatically scans for free space of the target hard disk(s). If space available, a disk partition will be created as a normal disk partition or a VFS sub-partition within a VFS partition already created. Saving a logical drive has been covered in Chapter 5.7.2. Automatic scanning of creation of a disk partition for copying a partition image file into the free space of a VFS partition already created has been discussed in Chapter 7.4.

8.2

So basically, the copying process involves selecting a WINDRV source file and a WINDRV target file. After pressing the OK button, the copying process will start and depending on the size of the source, one may take a coffee break to wait for it to finish. It is recommended that no other applications are being used at the same time that will involve disk operations.

8.2.1

So by clicking the Image Copier under the Tools Menu of WINDRV Client Configurator, one can click the control button to the right of the Input or Output box to obtain the above screen for selecting the respective source or target WINDRV file. Please refer to Chapter 5.7.1 for how to use the Choose File Name Window Dialog.

For Remote File, Name is the file name of the WINDRV file and Server is the IP address of the computer that WINDRV Server is running. Or leave the Server box blank and check the box for Use the default server from the main form.

8.3

As discussed previously, in Chapter 6 the setting of the Global Options will affect how a WINDRV source file is copied into a WINDRV target file. One can test and choose the appropriate settings for the specific purpose intended.

8.4

Please note that if one is using an evaluation version of WINDRV, then one can only use file of size up to 250Mb. Registered version allows one to copy file of any size that the operating system is capable of handling. (Please note that if one is using Windows 9X, and the partition containing the output file is a FAT partition, then the maximum file size is 4Gb. This limitation is imposed by windows; not WINDRV. So if one wants to copy a partition greater than 4Gb to a partition image file, one can use Win2K/XP to copy the partition as a partition image file to another NTFS partition. NTFS partition can hold a normal file of size greater than 4Gb).
